Is It Time to Change Rooms?

That is a question that has no easy answer. Every 6 months, or so, we ask our selves, “Where are we going next?” We’ve met some great people along the way and some not so great. We’ve had fun places to park our RV and some not so fun places.

While in West Virginia last winter, Carol received a call from a that was interested in us coming to Austin, TX and working in two of their RV parks. Discussions centered around the usual topics such as work involved, compensation, and when do we need to be there. After a few phone calls, they offered to fly us to Austin to look at the properties so we would get an idea of what we would be doing. We did that in early April this year.

Based on this contact, we made the decision it was time for us to move back to Texas – the land of great smoked brisket, great sausage, fantastic Gulf seafood and family. I’ve been somewhat reluctant to pick Texas as a destination because Texas is hot in the summer. Spending summers in areas further north, where highs in the 90’s are unusual, has been enjoyable. By moving back to Texas in the late fall, we would be able to acclimate to warmer temperatures gently.

We also considered getting a gate guarding  job in Texas. With the Eagle-Ford Shale drilling operation growing and getting larger, there is a huge need for gate guards on ranches where the drilling takes place. Gate guards can make a lot of money and the work is not hard. It generally requires a 24/7 commitment meaning someone has to be awake at all times. We would have to split our sleep and work schedule. I would not be working as Handyman. We would be registering vehicles in and out of our gate assignment. The length of time on a gate can vary from a few weeks to a few months. We began talking to a couple of gate guarding companies about this work. This looked promising.

So here we are just a few months away for our time at Manchester KOA to come to a close and we do not have a firm commitment from Austin. And we’re not 100% sold on the idea of gate guarding. So, what do we do? We pray, asking God to reveal to us what He wants us to do and where He wants us to go. And He spoke.

I really love what I do as Handyman. I’ve always enjoyed that work. People tell me I am good at it. Next week, we are going on a cruise to Alaska to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. Our kids have come together to give us this trip of a lifetime. I jokingly post on Facebook a comment about asking the cruise director if I could apply for a job as Handyman on the ship. That would be way cool, but highly unlikely. Realizing the options of being a Handyman on a cruise ship would be a stretch, I asked a couple of my real estate friends about working with them as Handyman. Just about all realtors use them.

One  realtor said,  her husband does that work for her. The other basically said, “I can keep you as busy as you want.” We asked and God spoke. He said, “This is what I want you to do!” No not literally with words. He spoke to our hearts. Carol and I were in agreement that this is what we would do. She would handle the business side of our new work, while I would do the project stuff.

After spending 20+ years in Corpus Christi, we know lots of people there. This is where our realtor friend, Brenda Marshal, is. But there is a problem. Corpus Christi area is a winter Texan destination spot. We know from previous experience, that it is difficult to get a long-term monthly RV site anywhere in the Corpus area especially in October. We called a few places we were interested in parking only to be told they had no spots available. Only one said they had a waiting list.

On Monday 7/31, Carol called them and found out that Sea Breeze RV in Portland has a temporary space for us through December. After December, we may have to move to a different site, but they will have a long-term space for us after January. Carol worked out the details and called me from my work to let me know we need to give a deposit for our site. This means making a firm commitment to do this. After a few question, I agreed and said, “I don’t know how this is going to work out but I am trusting God to work out the details.”

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “ Jer 29:11 (NIV)

Affirmation

Later than night (7/31) I was checking my email and found one from Rachel Dekker. I never get an email from Rachel Dekker. She is the oldest daughter of Ted Dekker, who is one of my favorite Christian authors. They have my email address from an on-line Bible study I recently completed, The Forgotten Way. Her email describes a scenario where she needs to step out of her comfort zone (room) to complete a task at hand.  I am hoping she will give me permission to share her message in a future blog post. Trust me when I say, her email was a huge affirmation of our decision.

Then this morning (8/4) my daily inspirational message said:

I declare Faith over fear.
Isa 41:10-13
‘Do not fear, for I am with you;
Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, surely I will help you,
Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’

One Sure Thing

When God speaks, He is clear. Affirmations surround us and help us stay focused on completing the task set before us. Initially, Carol was not convinced Corpus Christi would be the destination. Once God settled that in her heart, we knew this was our next calling.

We certainly do not know all the details yet, but we know who holds all the details. God’s timing is perfect as are His plans. We place our trust in Him and not our own understanding (Prov 3:5-6).

For us, it is time to changes rooms. I appreciate the support and encouragement that comes from family and friends. Please continue praying for us as we prepare to make this change.

Abundance

Christmas has come and gone; we are in the final week of 2016. We’ve experienced an abundance of gifts, food, and family gatherings. The minds of many are held captive as they enjoy playing with their new and cool gifts. Think about a cool gift you received 5 years ago. Does it still capture your attention? Has something newer taken its place?

Think about relationships. That first kiss, or the perfect mate that captured your heart. Years later do we feel the same way? I can remember the joy of meeting Jesus. My mind was like a sponge. I wanted to learn more about Jesus so I spent hours reading the Bible, attending various Bible study classes. I remember listening to various popular and gifted Christian authors and speakers as I drove from place to place.

But then life happens. Things get in the way of the ‘honeymoon’ phase of Christianity. And eventually, the joy that was once there is dulled by things that are not important. Complacency has taken root. In chapters 2 & 3 of the book of Revelation, the Apostle Paul writes letters to 7 churches. The letter to the church at Ephesus address this complacency:

Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Rev 2:4, NIV

So, what happened? I believe it is possible for Christians to lose the joy they once had because that is Satan’s goal.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. John 10:10 NASB

Jesus want believers to experience an abundant life, yet Satan wants to rob that from us. Satan does this by slowly attacking us in various ways. I recently read an opinion article on Chrisma News titled “8 Signs You Are Under Spiritual Attack.  The number 1 sign is a lack of spiritual passion.

“The enemy comes to steal your tenacity for the things of God. Suddenly your prayer life seems stalled. Your commitment is tested and you can’t seem to push though. You feel as though you are just going through the motions.”

While reading that article, I thought about the early Christians in Ephesus who were characterized as having lost their first love. Acts 19 tells a powerful story about the spiritual life and growth in Ephesus. Real revival was happening as the Apostle Paul ministered there. People were being saved, they were being baptized in the Holy Spirit, Paul’s preaching reached thousands, supernatural miracles were happening. The dramatic change Ephesus experienced due to the spread of Christianity impacted the businesses related to idol worship. And Satan did not like that at all.

In a letter the Apostle Paul wrote to the church at Ephesus we read how the church flourished in spite of the stronghold Satan had over the community through idol worship in the Temple of Artemis (also known as the Temple of Diana). Paul offers two prayers of encouragement for Christians in Eph 1:17-19 and Eph 3:16-19. And at the end of the letter, Paul encouraged Christians to remain strong by putting on the full Armour of God (Eph 6:10-17).

Is it possible for Christians to keep spiritual complacency out of our lives? I think it is more than possible. It will take work – and it will be worth it. What must we do to avoid spiritual complacency? I believe we must develop our spiritual muscles by:.

  • Staying Hungry for God
  • Going Deeper with God
  • Getting Revelation from God
  • Living in the Overflow

Come back to find out how we do this?

Countdown Continues

Yesterday, I escaped my post by claiming I had to replace a pool pump. This was legitimate. Remember this photo?

IMG_2931This is what the pool pump looked like on Saturday afternoon (8/22). The motor had seized meaning the pool was not filtering its 28000 gallons to keep the crystal clear water cleaned. We had to close the pool early on Saturday.  The owners ordered a new motor on Monday (8/24). Yesterday as I finished up the blog post, the office informed me our new motor arrived.

Time to put away to computer, grab a handful of tools and get that pump installed. After about 45 minutes of cleaning the old parts, and making sure everything fit, the new motor was installed.

IMG_2949That motor looks pretty good. And the best news – when I turned on the power, it came to life and started the process of moving the water from the pool through the sand filter and there were no water leaks anywhere.

IMG_2950You may think the pool looks pretty good. The problem is ALGAE. Algae is that nasty green stuff the grows in still water. And it sticks to everything. You can see the reflections of the clouds but you cannot see the bottom of this pool because the algae has turned the crystal clear water into a murky green mess. I wonder how long it will take to filter 28,000 gallons of this gunk?

This morning, I checked the progress. Water was still cloudy but it was clearing up. I can actually see the bottom and the water’s chemical levels tested safe for swimming. YAY! Other than being a little cold, we decided to open the pool. Campers were tolerant of the cloudy and cold water.

Tomorrow, I will check the chemical levels real close and make sure the pools get a good health check. The cool weather we’ve had for the past few days have kept the algae from being a real big problem.

I think the fog is beginning to lift. Thanks for stopping by, y’all come back now.

Dressing An RV Site

Site 46 at Harrisonburg/Shenandoah KOA needed a little sprucing up. The site had lots of room but it was not appealing.

thumb_IMG_2690_1024This very large rock was in the wrong place and needed to be moved. Also, the site grading was off and had several low spots where rain water would collect. How do you move rocks?

thumb_IMG_2689_1024The rock was no match to big Bertha.

thumb_IMG_2692_1024Here is the site after flipping the big rock out of a hole and adding about 10 loads of dirt to raise the site grading.

thumb_IMG_2691_1024I only got Bertha stuck one time. After getting her unstuck, the work continued.

IMG_2731

The big rock is now moved over by the road, and a back stone for the fire pit is planted. Also, the was covered with 6 loads of fresh mulch.IMG_2732I have a new respect for stone masons. The job of moving stones into position and fitting the stones together is tough physical work.

IMG_2733Sheesh! Where did these stones come from? Actually they were partially buried in the ground and had to come out so the site could be graded. Thankfully, big Bertha made this job easy. Now I just need to move the stones to the perimeter of the site.

IMG_2734Site 46 is now ready for more crushed rock where the picnic table is, and around the perimeter of the site. We will be planting grass in part of the site.

Next big projects include getting the pool ready for use and complete the kitchen remodel by Memorial Day at the end of May. And I am sure there will be smaller projects going on as well.

Mother’s Day weekend is our first big weekend in the park. We will be about 90% full so this will be a good test to see how the park infrastructure handles the crowd.

Thanks for stopping by, y’all come back now.

What Did You Do Today, Papa?

Oh how I miss those days when around the dinner table, we would share what we did that day. Time is flying by quickly because we are really busy here at Harrisonburg/Shenandoah Valley KOA. It is hard to believe we’ve been here one month already.

Some of my project work has been pretty easy and simple, others have taken a bit more time to complete, and some are a work in progress.

thumb_IMG_2652_1024

Add a door where there was once a wall.
(Sorry I do not have a photo of finished door.)

thumb_IMG_2653_1024

Added two sets of track lighting.

thumb_IMG_2654_1024

An RVer pulled out of their site with their cable still connected to our cable TV port. Consequentially, they pulled down the overhead cable and almost pulled a main junction box down. We decided to replace the cable by trenching it under ground. (PS – the soil up here is very rocky.)

thumb_IMG_2657_1024

This is a before shot of the sink in the laundry room. Tent and Camping Cabin campers can use this sink to wash their dishes. (I captured this photo after I started to deconstruct the base.)

thumb_IMG_2668_1024

New sink is in place, rear wall is prepped for painting.

thumb_IMG_2688_1024

Built a cabinet to hold towels and sheets we rent to campers who need them.

thumb_IMG_2663_1024

Brightly colored tulips great our campers. No, I did not plant them.

thumb_IMG_2689_1024

My newest toy – John Deere 250 skidsteer loader. This beast has power.

thumb_IMG_2690_1024

One of the RV sites that needs a little work.

thumb_IMG_2691_1024

Yep, I did it. I got the skidsteer stuck. That’s Ok. Our manager, Monica, has gotten this toy stuck a few times as well.

thumb_IMG_2692_1024

Site is ready for grading and lining the fire pit. The skidsteer flipped that huge boulder like it was made of paper mache. The hole left by the stone will be the fire pit.

thumb_IMG_2664_1024

View as we drive out of the of the RV park.

Other projects that are pending or a work in progress include:

  • Build a new wood crib for fire wood. I have to repair some water damage to the side of the maintenance shop first,
  • Build a new walk way after removing a small pine tree that is in the way,
  • Plumb triple sink in kitchen once it arrives,
  • Finish trimming out walls in kitchen,
  • Setup booths in dining area,
  • Build and install a pair of swinging cafe doors between kitchen and dining area,
  • Build and install a pass through serving bar between kitchen and dining area.

And of course, we have lots of place to visit and enjoy.

So, what did you do today?

Thanks for stopping by, y’all come back now.
